“Be joyful, keep the faith, do the little things you have seen me do.”
February 25, 2023~ David, Patron Saint of Wales
On March the 1st, Welsh business Cwtchie will be celebrating the life of the Patron saint of Wales with a very special offer.
Who was St David?
David, a charismatic monastic leader in the 6th century, was renowned for moving sermons. The grandson of a king, he was born on a Pembrokeshire cliff top in a ferocious storm.

He is credited with many miracles; most famously, at the synod of Brefi in 545, the earth rose beneath his feet so that the gathering was able to see him. A white dove settled on his shoulder as he spoke. St David is also famous for healing, legend tells us that many wells, still in existence today, sprung where his miracles were performed. David founded scores of religious communities and is considered the greatest figure in the Welsh Age of Saints.
Despite his royal heritage, David, known as Dewi in Welsh, lived a simple, humble life, pursuing self denial and austerity. He was teetotal, vegetarian and simply considered himself a channel for God’s grace. Reputedly kind and an avid polyglot, he died on March the 1st 589. His final sermon included the words ‘ “Be joyful, keep the faith,do the little things you have seen me do.”
How do Welsh people celebrate?
Today he is celebrated with cultural concerts and festivals of music and language known as Eisteddfodau. Schoolchildren across Wales wear Welsh National costume and traditional households will cook feasts of Cawl cennin and Welsh cakes. Many will decorate their homes with vases of golden daffodils, the National flower of Wales.

You can celebrate too!
Welsh people across the world, including the Welsh speaking community in Patagonia and ex-pat societies across the globe, join in with the celebrations. Many will gather to share traditional Welsh meals and enjoy music from male voice choirs.
