The Royal Welsh Show

August 7, 2023

Last week Team Cwtchie hit the road again, this time to Builth Wells for Wales’ biggest agricultural show of the year.

Situated in the South Glamorgan Hall, the team spent a busy week making new friends and greeting favourite customers.

‘We were delighted that people who had seen our posts came to say hello,’ says founder Anna Lloyd Owen. ‘One lady, whom we’d never met, came to tell us that her Cwtchie hoodie blanket is the best Christmas present her husband has ever given her. He was stood right there – I think it was a hint for a second one this year!’

‘Being an online business is great – but it was lovely to meet our customers in person, ‘adds co- founder Paula Williams. ‘We had a lot of fun getting visitors to model the soft, fleecy hoodies for our Instagram stories.’

The pair also made some excellent business contacts with other clothing brands and sellers.

‘Many of our neighbours had been selling at the Royal Welsh for twenty years or more – as a new business we’re always grateful for tips on the most savvy ways to conduct business.’

‘The Royal Welsh is a wonderful place to try new things. We sampled amazing Welsh produce, found antique cutlery and tried on some rather wonderful hats!’

Of course, the real business of the Royal Welsh happens outside the shopping areas. With over 8,000 livestock entered each year, the show attracts almost 200,000 visitors. Whilst the first show was held in Aberystwyth in 1904, it was awarded its ‘Royal’ status in 1922 when King George V became patron. The show moved to its current Llanelwedd site in 1963, pausing only for both World Wars and the more recent Covid 19 crisis.

Visitors travel from all corners of the UK and beyond to see the very best live stock and displays of endeavour from shearing to performances by Young Farmers.

With the variable Welsh weather, visitors were grateful of some indoor activities, including competitions and over 1000 stalls and food outlets. The Royal Welsh offers opportunities to purchase agricultural machinery, love spoons and, of course cosy blanket hoodies.

Next year’s event will take place on the 22nd to 25th July. To join in with the fun, contact:
