Mother’s Day is steeped in venerable tradition. In ancient Greece they celebrated Rhea, the mother of gods and goddesses, every spring. The polytheistic Romans celebrated Cybele with a festival every March as far back as 250BC. In the UK, there are records marking the event on every fourth Sunday in Lent since the 16th century. Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday, suffered a decline in popularity in the UK until WW2, when British troops were spurred on by their American and Canadian allies who honoured their mothers during to war by sending cards and gifts home. The tradition enjoyed a revival and remains a popular springtime event.
