The story of St Valentine 

Valentine was a Christian priest martyred in Rome on February 14th 269AD. He fell foul of Emperor Claudius II, who had banned betrothals and marriages in order to promote recruitment to his armies. Soldiers were sent abroad for over a year with poor pay and young men refused to join, leading Claudius to create the outrageous law. Valentine was arrested for performing secret marriages and jailed when he refused to stop.

Whilst in jail, he healed the sight of the jailer’s blind daughter, Julia. Claudius had him executed to prevent an uprising. On his way to the execution, Valentine left Julia a note signed ‘Your Valentine’ which began the tradition of sending love notes and cards. We celebrate him as the patron saint of lovers – although the story is deeply rooted in standing up for what you believe in.
